HOW TO COOK PERFECT RICE – FAIL-PROOF RICE RECIPE
How to cook perfect rice?
Cooking the perfect rice is very simple. Just follow these simple instructions, and you will be amazed at how easy it is to cook perfect rice.
Before we start A few words about rice
Rice is a grain, the seed of a type of grass, the most widely grown and the most important source of dietary carbohydrate on Earth.
There are almost 50,000 varieties of rice, and more are being created every year by cross-breeding—types of rice.
Long-grain, medium-grain, and short-grain
Rice is divided into three major families: long-grain, medium-grain, and short-grain. Each one of the grains has different characteristics.
Long-grain rice plumps and cooks into long-separate grains, which are also still a little absorbent: medium-length grains are a little softer, starchier, and stickier, and short-grain rice can be relied upon to stick together.
Brown rice (Whole rice) and white rice
Brown rice is whole grain rice. The rice is harvested, dried, and sold as-is. White rice has had the outer husk removed, leaving just the inner seed.
While whole grain rice is considered healthier and with higher nutrition values, it is less tasty and more acquired.
WHAT TYPE OF RICE SHOULD I BUY?
In this recipe, I recommend using white medium grain rice. I love to use this type of rice:
Jasmine is moist and soft in texture when cooked, with a slightly sweet flavor.
Persian rice (Domsiah) is moist when cooked but with a bite.
cooking the perfect rice - The method
Cooking the perfect rice is actually very simple when you follow this method. Just follow these simple steps.
- Fry the rice.
- Add water.
- Cook the rice.
- Let the rice rest.
HOW MUCH OIL SHOULD I USE FOR COOKING THE RICE?
Around one tablespoon per 1 cup of uncooked rice.
HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD I USE FOR COOKING THE RICE?
In general, rice needs about 1.5 to 2 times its volume in water: one cup of rice needs 1.5 – 2 cups of water.
Two cups of rice need 3 -4 cups water.
COLD OR BOILING WATER?
It doesn’t really matter. If you’re using cold water, you need to add 4 – 5 minutes to cooking.
I prefer to use boiling water as it is hassle-free.
How much salt should I use for cooking the rice?
Salt is a matter of individual taste. After adding the salt, the water should taste as you over-salted them a little bit. In the cooking process, the rice will absorb some of the saltiness.
The rule of thumb is that the rice needs about 1/2 tablespoon salt per 1 cup of rice.
Cooking time for the perfect rice
After the frying f the rice, it needs 15 -20 minutes of cooking on the lowest heat.
The cooking time may change based on factors like your gas, the weather, your pot, the humidity of the rice.
As long as you are in the range of 15 – 20 minutes, you are good.
RESTING TIME - A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS.
After the cooking is done, the rice has to rest for at least 5 -10 minutes. If you can, let it rest even more.
this will allow the rice to absorb more humidity and finish cooking.
One important rule. No peeking!
Don’t open the lid to check on the rice. It is doing great – trust me!
Opening the lid will allow steam to evaporate, and we don’t want that to happen.
FLUFFING - THE FINAL TOUCH
The final touch to perfect rice is fluffing.
After the resting time, we use a fork and gently fluff the rice. Stick the fork all the way to the bottom of the pot and fluff the rice.
Like magic, the rice grains will suddenly separate, and the grains will be one by one.
If you want to be a perfectionist, you can let the rice rest for another 3 – 5 minutes with a close lid after doing the fluff.
